Across the country in four minutes

Yahoo! posted this video of someone who drove from Portland, Maine, to Los Angeles and videotaped the whole thing at one second per mile. It's equivalent to road-tripping at 1,000 mph. It's all interstate, but I did glimpse some landmarks familiar to Route 66 travelers, including Tucumcari Mountain, some New Mexico mesas and Kaibab National … Continue reading Across the country in four minutes

Book review: “Once Upon a Highway”

Because "Once Upon a Highway: Route 66 in Oklahoma" (162 pages, New Forums, $36.95) is written and illustrated by an architect, you would expect drawings of intricately designed buildings, such as the Coleman Theatre Beautiful and the First United Methodist Church in Clinton, that latter which was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. But what makes … Continue reading Book review: “Once Upon a Highway”

Take It Easy

Speaking of standin' on a corner ... I'll bet you haven't seen this version in a long, long time, if at all. It's a BBC broadcast from 1973 during the Eagles' hair-farmin' days, and the song includes the a capella introduction.

Geezer Riders head into New Mexico

The Mainichi Daily Times' ongoing series about the Geezer Riders' trek on Route 66 continues with the crew visiting Cadillac Ranch, visiting the Midpoint Cafe and heading into Tucumcari, Santa Rosa and Albuquerque. It's amusing or irritating to read the errors in the story. Santa Rosa's Blue Hole is referred to as the Blowhole. It … Continue reading Geezer Riders head into New Mexico

More reviews added to I8Route66 site

Eckleberg & Grumblecake have added five restaurant reviews to their I8Route66 site, which concentrates on eateries on Albuquerque's Central Avenue. Draft of Illinois Route 66 bike trail developed

The Pontiac Daily Leader has a story about the proposed trail. But to view the whole map, go here for a nine-page Acrobat file. Looking over the maps, it looks like there are long stretches that hop around Route 66 and don't go on it, especially north. I'm sure it's for safety reasons it goes … Continue reading Draft of Illinois Route 66 bike trail developed
