A trip down Route 66 on Google Earth

Albert of Germany has made available a slew of Google Earth placemarks on Route 66. Albert has marked just about every town on 66 and a few landmarks. Very cool.

The placemarks can be found here for download. If you don’t have it, Google Earth can be downloaded here.

To see Google Earth’s capabilities, click on the Chain of Rocks Bridge placemark in Missouri. Once you zoom in, you’ll be able to see the water intake towers just south of the old Route 66 bridge and the turbulent flow of water over rocks in the Mississippi River from where the bridge got its name.

  1. We are plannning a trip across Rt 66 from Clearwater, FL. and need all the info we can get. Where is the best place to pick up RT 66? How long will it take us to travel from CLearwater, FL. to LA, Ca.? We are going by motorcycle. What tips can you give us re: lodging, resturants, prices etc. This is our dream trip and we hope to do it in the spring. Maybe May or early June. Just what towns or cities will we be going thru?

  2. I suggest you do your own homework to figure out what’s best for you. Route 66 passes through dozens and dozens of towns. Lodging and Restaurants have their own pages at the top of this site.

    Good luck.
