COVID-19 pandemic cancels Arizona Route 66 Fun Run for a second straight year

The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona announced its annual Fun Run car cruise, usually slated for early May, has been canceled for a second consecutive year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The association put out this message on its website:

We want to start by thanking everyone for the overwhelming support. Like many of you, we are eager for the day when it is safe to return and gather for events.
After careful consideration, the Association’s board has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Route 66 Fun Run. We do not feel comfortable hosting a large gathering at this time.
All registrations will be forwarded to 2022. However, if you would like a refund, please email nikki@historic66az.com with your name and mailing address and you will receive a check in the mail.
We do hope you still get out and enjoy a road trip on Route 66 this summer, just not with 800 of your Fun Run friends.

The Fun Run usually goes from Seligman to the western edge of Arizona. The association canceled its 2020 Fun Run in March last year.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said earlier this week he anticipates COVID-19 vaccinations for the general public in the U.S. would begin in April. Even with that scenario — which some health officials say is best-case — that would leave only a few weeks to inoculate tens of millions of people before early May.

For now, vaccinations are being given to the elderly, people with health-risk factors, medical workers, first responders and essential workers in higher-risk fields.

  1. I guess I don’t know enough about the fun run activities to know why it would need to be canceled. If it’s a driving tour / parade as the picture suggests, that’s no different than driving anywhere else in your car,

  2. I Agee. Businesses along the route depend on The Fun Run as a significant part of their annual income. The Route 66 Association is in danger of killing a tradition of over 27 years. People plan their activities for the year and if they cannot count on an annual event being held reliably they won’t committ. A very bad decision by the Association directors that call their leadership in question.
