After the owner of Slug Bug Ranch moved the five Volkswagen Beetles south of the original site near Conway, Texas, the landlord claimed possession of them and they were moved back.
The Texas Old Route 66 Association alluded to this fluid situation in a social media post about two weeks ago:
Slug Bug Ranch, inspired by the internationally famous Cadillac Ranch 35 miles to the west in Amarillo, is where five vintage Volkswagen Beetles were planted nose-down into the Texas soil just off Route 66.
Contacted by phone last week, Slug Bug Ranch owner Steve Clegg said his former landlord claimed possession of the Beetles, prompting him to move them back.
Clegg said he still plans to open in January an alternate site of Slug Bug Ranch about a mile south. He said he has 32 Volkswagen Beetles he’s located in Missouri he needs to move there.
Clegg previously said his landlord wants her 3 1/2 acres in Conway to be used for a motel chain.
Tommy Crutchfield created Slug Bug Ranch in 2002. He died in 2009.
