A closer look at the Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds

The host of the Adventures in TV-Land channel on YouTube paid a recent visit to the Route 66 Experience at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The result was a nearly 20-minute video of what the site offers.

The Illinois Route 66 Experience is much more interactive and informative than you might think. It also helps the video host shot footage of the neon signs at dusk, when they light up.

The address of the Route 66 Experience is at 801 E. Sangamon Ave. (map here), just off the Peoria Road alignment of Route 66.

The state of Illinois has spent millions of dollars to add new attractions and augment existing ones along Route 66 before the highway’s centennial in 2026.

  1. It’s located inside the State Fairgrounds. The main gate (one half block west of 66) is always open during the day; there is no admission. I’m afraid too many will bypass a truly remarkable display because the entrance is a bit out of the way. The video above gives a very good sampling of what any 66 enthusiast will thoroughly enjoy.
