
The iconic western swing band Asleep At the Wheel this week announced a Route 66 Centennial Tour in August and September, where it will perform at selected Route 66 cities.
“Come Get Your Kicks on Route 66!” the band stated on its Facebook page.
Here is the list of dates, cities and venues:
- Aug. 20: Oklahoma City at Tower Theatre OKC
- Aug. 21: Amarillo at Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts
- Aug. 22: Albuquerque at Route 66 Casino Hotel
- Aug. 28: Tulsa at Cain’s Ballroom
- Aug. 29: St. Louis at The Sheldon
- Aug. 30: Chicago at Old Town School of Folk Music
- Sept. 3: Flagstaff, Arizona at The Orpheum Theater
- Sept. 5: Los Angeles at The Troubadour
It should be noted that The Troubadour, The Orpheum, Tower Theatre and especially Cain’s Ballroom are historic venues in their own right.
Asleep At the Wheel, led by Ray Benson, has been the torchbearer for western swing music since 1970 and has won 10 Grammy Awards.
Lastly, the band commonly opens its shows with Bobby Troup’s “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66.”
The band has done other Route 66 tours in the past, and its affinity for the Mother Road remains strong.
