Design revealed for east, west Route 66 welcome signs in Seligman

The folks who want to erect Route 66 welcome signs on the east and west edges of Seligman, Arizona, announced a design has been selected and that a request for proposals to build the signs soon will be sent to bonded and licensed contractors.

According to drawings on the Seligman, AZ Welcome Arches page on Facebook, the signs will be 23 feet tall with a retro design.

The group also thanked longtime resident and Route 66 champion Angel Delgadillo for presenting a $20,000 check for the project. For the past 18 months, he has been building and selling custom birdhouses, which have generated the money.

The project received the endorsement of the Seligman Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to have the signs done by Route 66’s centennial in 2026.

The signs are the brainchild of Nancy Echeverria. She began the fundraiser for the project after her father, Patrick Russell, died in 2022. He grew up in Seligman and held many memories of Route 66.

She initially proposed welcome arches over Route 66, but that was deemed not possible.
