Supertam on 66 owners open fifth Route 66-related shop in region

Chris and Andrea Briley are perhaps best known for owning the Supertam on 66 ice cream shop in Carterville, Missouri.

But business columnist Wally Kennedy of the Joplin Globe reported the Brileys recently opened their fifth Route 66-related shop — Briley’s Ice Cream, Soda & Gifts at 901 S. Main St. in Joplin.

The others are Dogs on the Route in Carterville, Aunt Andie’s Kitchen on 66 and the former location of Briley’s Silver Screen in nearby Miami, Oklahoma.

Kennedy noted the Briley’s Ice Cream shop is two blocks south of the original Route 66 in Joplin and likely would be well-positioned for Route 66’s centennial next year.

The Briley’s gift section is all about Route 66. There’s a really cool selection of T-shirts that feature a Route 66 theme and Joplin as a design element. There’s a postcard that features the Connor Hotel and Route 66, which passed right in front of the hotel. There are coffee mugs, caps, shot glasses, ornaments and passport guides that detail the features of this historic route. It’s just the beginning of what the Brileys have planned.

“I love Route 66,” Chris Briley said. […]

Briley’s shop features a 1956 bar that was salvaged from a soda shop in Oklahoma. The ice cream is from the Chocolate Shoppe, based in Madison, Wisconsin. Briley gave me a spoonful sample of the blackberry and lemon. It tasted just like summer. You can get cones, cups, sundaes and floats. There’s a full line of specialty drinks with local names, like the Mother Road Mix, the Spook Light Sparkler and the Range Line Refresher.

But that’s not all. Briley’s soon will be offering quarter-pound hot dogs.

The Brileys in 2021 acquired Supertam on 66, best known for its impressive collection of Superman memorabilia, from longtime owner Larry Tamminen.
