Admiral Twin Drive-In theater in Tulsa to open for its 75th season on April 3

The landmark Admiral Twin Drive-In theater in Tulsa will open its gates on April 3 for its 75th season.

According to Fox 23 in Tulsa, the theater will screen “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” that night.

But owner Blake Smith said the 75th anniversary celebration will be on May 29, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music and screenings of “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Outsiders.” The latter film, based on the popular S.E. Hinton novel, had scenes filmed at the theater.

If you’re in town for “The Outsiders,” you owe it to yourself to pay a visit to The Outsiders House Museum. The house on the city’s north side was used in the film, and it now contains memorabilia from the 1983 film.

That afternoon, the Admiral Twin will host a car show to coincide with the Route 66 Capital Cruise. The cruise itself hopes to draw a world-record 3,000 classic cars.

The Admiral Twin Drive-In opened along Route 66 in 1951, and its second screen was built a year later. It sits off the older Admiral Place alignment of Route 66.

fire destroyed the drive-in’s twin screens in 2010, but donations and public sentiment prompted its owner to rebuild and reopen two years later.
