Grants MainStreet, a nonprofit organization based in Grants, New Mexico, recently announced it has purchased the Roarin’ 20’s neon sign and adjoining lot for the long-closed Route 66 bar.
“This historic landmark has long been a part of our community’s story, and we’re excited to begin the journey of revitalizing the sign and bringing it back to life — preserving its character while celebrating the rich history it represents here in Grants,” Denise Hanson, director of Grants MainStreet, announced on Facebook.
“We have a bold vision for this space, and we can’t wait to share what’s ahead!” she added. “Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to invest in our downtown and honor the stories that make Grants so special.”
The sign stands at West Santa Fe Avenue (aka Route 66) and Third Street.
Route 66 researcher Blue Miller stated in a comment thread that the sign originally came from Frank Venaglia’s Vena’s Roarin’ 20s club in Albuquerque that closed in 1965 after it lost its liquor license.
The restaurant was demolished in 2014, but the sign still stands.
