The long-dark tower sign that advertised a now-defunct Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Bristow, Oklahoma, is glowing again for the first time in about 70 years after a relighting ceremony on Saturday night.
Naturally, a bunch of Route 66 enthusiasts posted photos and videos from the big event:
The tower sign once stood a block or two from Route 66, but it was moved to the Mother Road several months ago as part of the restoration process.
A state Route 66 revitalization grant covered $700,000 of the $1 million project, with the rest from the city.
Grover Hubert “Red” Beard designed the 100-foot-tall sign and installed it atop his 24-hour dealership in 1949.
The sign is believed to have gone dark sometime in the 1950s. The Bristow Historical Society, which shepherded the restoration project, claims it is the tallest freestanding sign on Route 66.
