Fresh kicks

Vania Fernandes and her jazz group bring a fresh arrangement to Bobby Troup's "Route 66." I believe they're based in Portugal. It still amazes me how many ways that a 60-year-old song can be performed.

Music is "Windfall by Son Volt. It comes from the "Trace" album, one of the finest country-rock releases ever.

Anything but random

The Random Players play a rocked-up medley of Bobby Troup's "Route 66" and Alan Jackson's "Mercury Blues" during a gig in Germany. I approve.

A taste of summer

Here's a video tribute to a Route 66 legend in St. Louis -- Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. It's the best place for frozen treats on the Mother Road, and maybe anywhere. Music is "The Sweetest Thing" by U2.
