‘A highway for vagabonds’

The Windsor (Ont.) Star has an interesting feature about photographer Sandi Wheaton, whose black-and-white photos of Route 66 in California's Mojave Desert will be on display beginning May 2 at Deborah Friesen Architect's studio in Toronto. Wheaton's interest was piqued five years ago when she was blowing through a lonely and forsaken stretch of Route … Continue reading ‘A highway for vagabonds’

Book review: “Roadside USA: Route 66 and Beyond”

"Roadside USA: Route 66 and Beyond" by Shellee Graham and Jim Ross (64 pages, Ghost Town Press, $10.95) isn't strictly a book as much as a bound collection of their vibrant travel photographs in postcard form. The 30 postcards are detachable from the binding so you can mail them to friends and family. However, "Roadside … Continue reading Book review: “Roadside USA: Route 66 and Beyond”

“Calibattin’ on Route 66”

Here's a nifty find: a short film of two gals getting their kicks on the Mother Road. I like the way this was shot and edited, especially with the peppy music. Kali Meadows, the film's creator, has a blog with a lot of interesting photos and graphic design.

Taking 66 in a ’66

The Post-Crescent in Wrightstown, Wis., has a story about the Butz family, who took a three-week journey on old Route 66 in a 1966 Chevrolet Impala. Here's a photo collection from the family's trip. The FAQs with the main story are informative for Mother Road novices, too.

Book review: “Route 66 Railway”

To my knowledge, a book had never explored the relationship between the railroad and historic Route 66. That's no longer the case with the publication of Elrond Lawrence's "Route 66 Railway" (Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, 176 pages, $49.50). Subtitled "The Story of the Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in the American Southwest," … Continue reading Book review: “Route 66 Railway”
