I just got back home from traveling during the Memorial Day weekend, with very little Internet access the entire time. So I'll be playing catch-up on the news along Route 66 in the next day or so. Nothing really big or urgent had occurred, but I think you'll find some of the items I'll be … Continue reading Programming note

A few days ago, it was reported that a new Route 66 passport would be made available for travelers across Arizona. The passports won't be available until May 27, but Route 66 advocate Sharlene Fouser gave me a list of where you can pick them up at that time: Ash Fork Visitor Center, 901 W. … Continue reading Arizona Route 66 passport locations

We don’t do that
I like practical jokes as much as the next guy. The ones by these folks and anything involving Brad Paisley are pretty funny. But doesn't it seem counterproductive for news outlets to engage in such foolishness, even if it is April Fool's Day? (Yeah, Science magazine, I'm looking at you.) I've invested a lot of … Continue reading We don’t do that

A tribute to Bob
Of all of the obituaries I've read since Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire died last week, this one by the Guadalupe County Communicator in Santa Rosa, N.M., is the best. Those who know anything about the Communicator wouldn't be surprised by the story's excellence. But if you aren't familiar with the newspaper, go here.
Notes from the road
The Tulsa World reported that longtime Route 66 business McElroy Tire, at 1545 E. 11th St., will close at year's end. It had been there since the early 1930s, but company President Kent McElroy said the firm had been squeezed financially by national tire chains and discount stores. McElroy Tire is notable for its big … Continue reading Notes from the road
Notes from the road
Megan Carter e-mailed a few days ago to report that she's suspending her quest to ride a part of Route 66 on horseback until spring, simply because winter will inevitably set in. However, it's too bad she didn't continue her riding for another week or two; the weather in the Midwest has been incredibly nice … Continue reading Notes from the road
A visit with Bob
Longtime roadie and Chicago Sun-Times columnist Dave Hoesktra this week visited with Bob Waldmire as the terminally ill Route 66 artist hunkered down in a converted school bus near his hometown of Springfield, Ill. Waldmire talks about his favorite Route 66 things (one is in Oklahoma) and about cremation arrangements after he dies (half his … Continue reading A visit with Bob
Bob Waldmire saying goodbye
Artist Bob Waldmire, famous for his intricate Route 66-inspired artwork and being the unofficial inspiration to hippie van Fillmore in the Disney/Pixar movie "Cars," has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, reports Dave Bakke of the Springfield (Ill.)
