Road Trip Route 66 app is updated

Kelly Ludwig’s Road Trip Route 66 app, initially released for iPhones in early 2011, recently received an extensive update.

Those who already have the app should simply update it through their iPhone or iTunes account. Those who don’t have it ought to get it soon — it’s been discounted to 99 cents through the month of July.

“Road Trip 66″ contains more than 1,800 roadside attractions (an increase of about 400), including motels, neon signs, restaurants, and museums on the Mother Road.

The app also is compatible with iPod Touches and iPads, as long as you’ve installed the iOS 5.0 operating system.

Ludwig said in an email:

The design has been has been refined, information & photos updated and added. […] I have tried to keep up with all of the road “evolutions” through Route66News as well as other sources. Last year, David Knudsen gave me permission to use their information from the Route 66 Dining and Lodging Guide, and you will find it all there (plus updates as I learn them). Of course, each entry has a link back to their book.

Besides the new design, the new feature of “wanna go” and “seen it” flags have to be my favorite addition. You can mark the places that that are of interest to me and when you return to the map or the listing — you can see them at a quick glance. You can even toggle the categories to reveal only flags on your map.

Here are a few screen shots of the juiced-up app:

More about the app can be found on its dedicated website, in addition at the iTunes store.

Disclosure: I’ve contributed some information for the app, and its developer is an advertiser on this site. Regardless, it’s a good app (as my initial review indicates), and a substantial improvement to it is newsworthy.

  1. I have had this app since the first version. Won’t replace my guide books and maps, but I like the ability to quickly locate and then navigate to a location. Kelly included an error reporting feature so that data can be corrected in near real time unlike books that go stale. Good to have pictures and descriptions of things to see and do. If I were on Facebook I would “like” it. 🙂
