Extras from “Billy Connolly’s Route 66”

Longtime readers may remember “Billy Connolly’s Route 66,” a television miniseries in 2011 that set off a mini-boom of Route 66 interest around the world, especially the United Kingdom.

Here’s a 46-minute segment of outtakes — including the Blue Whale of Catoosa, Okla. — and musings from Connolly during the production:

You can buy the DVD of the program here. Connolly also wrote a book about the experience.

UPDATE: Readers have noted the DVD version is formatted for Region 2/B, which means the discs will play only in Europe, Greenland, the French territories, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. That’s OK for our overseas readers, but not in the Western Hemisphere.

A region-free DVD player will handle it, but not too many people own those.

However, this search on YouTube will provide you full episodes of the series.

  1. Not sure you know this, but the discs you link to will not work in almost all players. It’s a “Region B2” disc, which means unless you have a “region free” player, it won’t work in machines made for the American market. America is Region A1, B2 = Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
btw, if anybody knows where I can buy an A1 copy of the show, let me know. I’d really like to see this.

  2. Gary – virtually all the episodes, if not all, are on YouTube. What I found curious is that he covered the entire route in only four episodes. In the first, he literally found nothing of interest after downtown Chicago until he got to Pontiac – ! Seriously, I know the dude was into seeing the countryside from his motorbike, but he missed an awful lot just between the corner of Michigan & Jackson and downtown Joliet. It’s like all that didn’t exist for him. Silly newbie!!
