Neon relighting ceremony for Gearhead Curios in Galena set for April 24

The Route 66 Association of Missouri on Sunday announced a date of April 24 for the neon relighting at Gearhead Curios in Galena, Kansas.

The new neon will involve several elements at the former Texaco gas station:

Around dusk approximately 6:30PM on April 24th we will “flip the switch” and light beautiful red TEXACO and Gearhead Curios neon with green neon accents. Our Texaco lollypop sign will receive its own splash of green neon. A visible Wayne gas pump next to Doc and two 50s era Bennet pumps in our pump island.

You can RSVP for the event here. Those who wish to donate for the neon-relighting cause can message Gearhead Curios on Facebook here. Thye also can mail a check to Missouri Neon, which is doing the restoration work, to: MO Neon, Tricia Garver, 417.799.1809, job # 85742.

The association also is matching every dollar donated through Facebook up to $2,500. More here:

Gearhead Curios proprietor Aaron Perry last year added a replica of Doc Hudson from the Disney-Pixar animated movie “Cars” to the store at Sixth and Main streets in downtown Galena. It sits less than a half-mile down old Route 66 from Cars on the Route, which contains a replica of Tow Mater from the film and the original 1951 International boom truck that inspired the character.

Perry bought the 1939 gas station in fall 2018 so he could sell his “gearhead” artwork (hence the name) and Route 66 souvenirs.
