Supertam on 66 ice-cream parlor in Carterville closes, is put up for sale

Famous for its Superman memorabilia collection, the Supertam on 66 shop in downtown Carterville, Missouri, has closed and is being put up for sale.

The business put out this announcement on Facebook on Saturday:

Proprietor Larry Tamminen also said in a text message the sale would include the Superman collection that he’s gathered for more than 30 years. The shop also offered a Superman ice cream in bright blue, red and yellow colors.

Larry’s wife, Barbara, also said in an email that Larry’s health was a factor in him putting the shop on the market.

KOAM-TV also stopped by the shop once the station heard it was for sale:

“It’s I hate to do it, kids just love it, you meet people from all over the world, I mean travelers from all over it’s really sharp you wouldn’t believe it.”
He’s got a guest book make that, several guest books, signed by visitors from places across the U.S. and the world many written in their native languages. They came for his collection and his famous ice cream flavors, bins, that will now sit empty. As for his reason for closing up shop… “Mainly the body, Superman’s body here, but that’s, yea, 70 years old and retired.”

Larry also shut down his shop early for the winter season in 2019 because of a lingering case of pneumonia.

Here’s a video documentary about the shop from just two years ago:

Joplin, MO, Life also published a good story about Supertam on 66 in 2015.

UPDATE 5/13/2021: The Joplin Globe published a story about Supertam on 66 being put up for sale.
