Route 66 pedestrian underpass in Chelsea reopens to the public

The historic pedestrian tunnel under Route 66 in Chelsea, Oklahoma, recently reopened to the public after vandalism forced its closing about a year ago.

The Oklahoma Route 66 Association made the announcement of the reopening of the underpass:

The tunnel was refurbished in 2016 with a Route 66-style mural that spotlights Chelsea landmarks.

The tunnel hearkens back to a time when four-lane Route 66 was so busy that locals built a tunnel so pedestrians could cross the highway safely.

The Route 66 Times posted several photos of the images in the underpass mural.

There also is a pedestrian tunnel under Admiral Place (aka Route 66) in Tulsa that, at least report, was opened on weekdays so children at nearby Sequoyah Elementary School could cross the four-lane street safely.

There are also pedestrian tunnels on Route 66 in El Reno, Oklahoma, and Sayre, Oklahoma.
