Demolition will spare El Rancho Motel’s big sign in Barstow

The landmark El Rancho Motel sign in Barstow, California, will be spared despite the imminent demolition of the motel itself after a massive fire earlier this year.

California Route 66 booster Beth Murray stated in late October in posts to the Historic Route 66 group on Facebook that the massive sign will remain, and she was able to salvage the No. 66 door at the motel.

She said the mileage signs to other destinations on Route 66 also would remain.

Here’s another post:

The suspicious fire in July destroyed much of the property. The building had been red-tagged as uninhabitable about a month before due to hazardous conditions.

Cliff Chase built the motel in the 1940s, partly out of old railroad ties. The 100-foot-tall neon sign was erected in 1947.
