First US Bike 66 sign dedicated on Tulsa’s Route 66

The first of 40 US Bike 66 signs coming to Tulsa was dedicated a few days ago by local and state officials near the Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on Route 66 shop.

Among those attending the ceremony were Mayor G.T. Bynum, the Tulsa Route 66 Commission, Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation Tim Gatz, Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell and Buck Atom’s owner Mary Beth Babcock.

Fox23 in Tulsa reported:

The signs will be installed along the nearly four-hundred miles of historic Route 66 in Oklahoma and the route will be added to the U.S. Bicycle Route System. […]

“Without the signage, it’s hard for motorists to know that they need help. They need to share the road with Route 66 enthusiasts that may be on a bicycle. So this will help again from a safety perspective,” said Pinnell.

State officials want to have the route well-marked by Route 66’s centennial in 2026.

US Bike 66 also is signed in Kansas and Missouri.
