This month’s Route 66 Centennial Speaker Series presentation features baseball on the Mother Road

As Major League Baseball goes deep into the throes of its postseason, the October edition of the Route 66 Centennial Speaker Series features Jordan Adams’ “America’s Game on America’s Road: A Regional Exploration of Baseball and Route 66.”

The free livestreamed presentation will be on Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. Eastern time and 11 a.m. Pacific.

More about it:

In this session, Jordan Adams explores the vibrant world of semi-professional baseball that once flourished along Route 66 in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and the Ozarks. From legendary Negro League teams such as the Kansas City Monarchs, the Tulsa Oilers, and the Baxter Springs Blues to hometown Twilight League clubs and the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids, Adams traces how baseball connected communities across the Mother Road.

These local fields also launched remarkable careers, including that of future Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle.

Jordan Adams is a Social Science instructor at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

He holds a master’s degree in history from Pittsburg State University and works extensively with the Baxter Springs Historical Society. He served as president of the board of directors for nine years and is currently the board’s treasurer. While earning his bachelor’s degree at Pittsburg State University, he interned with the Baxter Springs Heritage Center & Museum. It was during this time that he became involved with the Historical Society.

The free registration for the session is here.
