A new Oklahoma Route 66 centennial license plate is available to reserve, and proceeds will go toward the Oklahoma Route 66 Association’s preservation and tourism efforts.
One hundred prepaid signups for the plate are required before they are produced.
If interested, you should fill this form, print it and mail it to Service Oklahoma with a check. When it receives the 100 reservations for the plate, they will be produced and shipped.
The fee will be a little less than $50. For questions, call Service Oklahoma at 1-800-522-8165 or 405-521-2468.
In a recent post by the association, it explained how this license plate program came to be:
Representative Derrick Hildebrant of Catoosa introduced House Bill 3147 in February for a special Route 66 Centennial license plate, working with state Senator Ally Seifried. They gathered support from multiple other representatives and senators before passing unanimously. “This license plate is intended to celebrate the Route 66 Centennial while supporting the preservation, education, and tourism efforts [the] organization leads across our state,” Hildebrant said. A portion of the proceeds from every license plate will go towards the Oklahoma Route 66 Association.
Association President Rhys Martin said he was delighted about the opportunities the funds from this plate would make possible. “Route 66 in Oklahoma goes through more than 40 communities and covers over 400 miles,” Martin said. “It’s known as the Main Street of America and it is still Main Street in many of these towns. Our work to promote the highway, advocate for its preservation, and educate travelers on what they can see and do along the way is more important than ever. This will help us continue telling Oklahoma’s story to people from around the world as we begin the road’s next 100 years.”
A motorcycle plate version will also be available later.
A white Route 66 license plate, available since 1996, is also still available, with part of those funds going to the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton.
