Another Route 66 movie is in production
I found out about this film recently from a comment by Susan in Tulsa-area blog, Batesline.com, on a subject that had little to do with Route 66. Susan was right. The sketchy information I gleaned from a variety of Web sites is this: Stand-up comedian and cartoon artist Harland Williams is in the middle of … Continue reading Another Route 66 movie is in production
Pedal pushers
A newspaper in Cheshire, England, tells about a group of teachers who cycled on Route 66 to raise more than 25,000 pounds for schools that help teach kids with learning difficulties. The story is here.
Route 66 bridge is probably saved
NOTE: This has been corrected from its earlier version. The Macoupin County spokeswoman who initially called me was wrong; the county board had not yet voted to save the bridge. The board will vote on the matter Nov. 8, and she said passage is likely because the board chairman supports the proposal. The Macoupin County … Continue reading Route 66 bridge is probably saved

The heartwarming tale of Tour de Clarence

Clarence was living in an RV park in the Route 66 town of Tucumcari, N.M., with a moped as his only form of transporation. Clarence was befriended by bikers attending the Mother Road Rally in Tucumcari. Later, … Continue reading The heartwarming tale of Tour de Clarence
Getting Smart on Route 66
Annette of Toronto has a blog called SCOOT, or Smart Car Owners of Toronto. The Smart car is a dinky (and cute) vehicle made by DaimlerChrysler that gets fantastic mileage. One owner reports getting 78 miles per gallon on a cross-country trip. Whether that's U.S. gallons and Imperial gallons, I'm not sure. Still impressive, however. … Continue reading Getting Smart on Route 66
Dennis Hopper, Route 66 photographer?
Yeah, that surprised me, too. Dennis Hopper is best-known as a director ("Easy Rider," part of which was photographed on Route 66) and an Oscar-winning actor ("Hoosiers") who nearly became a booze and drug casualty but straightened himself out nicely during the 1980s.I found this news release about a Hopper photograph, "Double Standard," being installed … Continue reading Dennis Hopper, Route 66 photographer?
Mercedes club to mark anniversary with Route 66 tour

A Route 66 photography book is in the works
While scanning an article about photographer Roy Gumpel, I found this enticing tidbit: What Gumpel likes best about photography is shooting people in "interesting environments." An assignment to photograph in black and white the people and places of Route 66 for National Geographic Explorer is now a book in the making. There's no word on … Continue reading A Route 66 photography book is in the works
