Heritage tourism

The New York Times took down its firewall several weeks ago that kept online readers from seeing much of its content. That means that you now can read "The Virtues of Avoiding Interstates," an August 2007 article about tourists who are avoiding the superslab and are seeking out the historic two-lane roads of America. The … Continue reading Heritage tourism

Smartcar takes the 66 highway

Todd Lassa, who's blogging for Motor Trend magazine, is driving smart fortwo car models on Route 66. The dinky car was challenged by a snowstorm in Flagstaff, but it seemed to handle it OK. Near Flagstaff, in a part of Arizona that was hit with a big snow storm, smart replaced the standard 15-inch tires … Continue reading Smartcar takes the 66 highway

Gas prices coming down in 2008?

Maybe so. This seems to go against the conventional wisdom that gasoline prices will keep inching upward. But an report last week by the Christian Science Monitor indicates that the price at the pump may fall modestly in the fast-coming year. Even if the winter is somewhat colder, the energy markets may have a greater … Continue reading Gas prices coming down in 2008?

Brits invade the Mother Road

Owen Adams of the Sunday Mirror in London tells about his trip on Route 66 with other Britons in a coach. A few things are left out in the article, including Kansas. But the piece is generous in length, and strikes a decidedly positive tone about the Mother Road. Adams also plugs Archer Direct, which … Continue reading Brits invade the Mother Road

Review: “Dinosaurs Across Route 66” comic

So many of them fret about whether there will be enough young people interested in the Mother Road to keep it viable in the future. That's why many roadies rejoiced at the 2006 release of Disney-Pixar's animated movie, "Cars," which … Continue reading Review: “Dinosaurs Across Route 66” comic

A glimpse of the past

Here's an all-too-brief clip of an 8-mm movie of three 16-year-olds driving from Arizona to Chicago to visit a girlfriend at Christmastime in 1957. They're in a '53 Ford, and they have to stop on Route 66 somewhere in New Mexico to put snow chains on the tires.

Route 66 comic includes a tour

I received an e-mail from Phil Yeh, creator of the newly published "Dinosaurs Across Route 66" comic book. It looks like he's doing more than just publishing a salute to the Mother Road. Yeh said: I am planning to cover much of old Route 66 from January to April in 2008 and would love to … Continue reading Route 66 comic includes a tour

Drew’s road trip

This is a segment from the 2005 movie "Elizabethtown." You'll see Route 66, then the Round Barn and Hillbillee's in Arcadia, Okla., at the 7:14 mark. I was about to say it seems unlikely that anyone would put 42 hours of music on CDs for a road trip -- until I realized that I have … Continue reading Drew’s road trip
