I recently was directed to this terrific site, the Broer Map Library, that has high-quality scans of maps from all over the world from different eras. This includes the eight states that carried Route 66, which can be found at an index here. The Broer collection is a great resource for highway researchers. You can … Continue reading When U.S. 66 was U.S. 60

Heaven at Hank’s
Emily, aka Red Fork Hippie, has created a new blog called IndieTulsa, which features independent businesses in Tulsa. Her latest post is about Hank's Hamburgers on the Admiral alignment of old Route 66. She speaks the truth about this excellent diner, including the peanut butter balls. Roadfood.com was impressed with it, too.
The case of the mysterious traffic surge
Traffic at Route 66 News jumped to record levels today, fueled mostly by a link from the Wigwam Motel in Rialto, Calif. The motel showed how its teepee design inspired the Cozy Cone Motel in the animated hit movie, "Cars." That link to here has existed for nearly 10 months, so I was flummoxed on … Continue reading The case of the mysterious traffic surge
Postcard display returns by popular demand
The Albuquerque library system had a traveling exhibit of vintage postcards that displayed varying times in the city's history. That, of course, included images from Route 66. The exhibit ran from April 2005 to last December. However, there was enough continued interest that the postcards will be on display again through March 24 at the … Continue reading Postcard display returns by popular demand

It's big, but not nearly as huge as the one … Continue reading Roadside America updates

Route 66 on ice
The Lope took a bunch of striking photographs after the terrible ice storm that struck the Route 66 town of Joplin, Mo., and other cities in eastern Oklahoma and southwest Missouri. He calls the post "Beautiful Disaster," which seems appropriate. The photo shown here is one that Ace shot, and even better ones are at … Continue reading Route 66 on ice
Czech Route 66 Web site is launched
Zdenek Jurasek, a resident of the Czech Republic who first journeyed down Route 66 in 1998, has launched a Web site in the Czech language to help spread the word to his fellow citizens about the Mother Road. The URL is www.r66.cz/ Jurasek wrote in an e-mail, which I lightly edited for clarity, telling about … Continue reading Czech Route 66 Web site is launched
Our Lady of the Highways now has a Web site
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Highways, which has stood along Route 66 near Raymond, Ill., since 1959, now has a Web site that was launched a few days ago by Peter Stork, of Digital Route 66 fame. Stork tells me of the site: I've developed it for my future in-laws (Illinois Rt 66 … Continue reading Our Lady of the Highways now has a Web site
