Arizona woman eats two 72-ounce steaks in an hour at Big Texan in Amarillo

Here’s a stomach-churning feat: A woman from Arizona devoured not one, but two 72-ounce steak dinners in about an hour at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo.

The Big Texan posted this message and two photos on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon:

This lovely lady @omgitsmiki from Tucson, AZ completed not only one, but TWO 72oz steak meals back to back. First in 26:40 and second 34:30 👏🏼🤠🥩 @ The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery

The woman, identified as professional competitive eater Miki Sudo, posted a short video on Instagram of her polishing off that second steak. She’s won the women’s title for six straight years at the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

You might think Sudo is too trim-looking to polish off the Big Texan’s gargantuan meal. However, a longtime employee told me years ago the ones who can most easily accomplish it are not the big, beefy eaters, but the wiry ones.

In addition to the 72-ounce steak, the Big Texan challenge includes a salad, a shrimp cocktail, a baked potato and a roll. You get the meal for free if you consume it all in an hour.

Finding anyone who can consume two of those meals — that’s nine pounds of meat — in one sitting is rare. It’s rarer to find a woman who’s done it.

However, it’s not a record. In 2015, 120-pound Molly Schuyler of Nebraska ate THREE Big Texan 72-ounce steak meals in a mere 20 minutes. She gobbled the first in under five minutes, destroying the record of 8 minutes, 52 seconds set by fellow competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut in 2008.

The Big Texan’s 72-ounce steak dinner challenge began as a publicity stunt by founder Bob Lee in 1962.

The Big Texan started on Amarillo Boulevard (aka Route 66) in Amarillo in 1960. After Interstate 40 opened in the early 1970s, the Big Texas picked up and moved there to ensure its survival. However, it turns out the Big Texan’s current location sits on an obscure 1920s alignment of Route 66. So it never left the Mother Road at all.

  1. I see nothing to be congratulated about here. It just gross gluttony. Think of what eating so much so rapidly did for her body. When “the prevalence of obesity in the USA was 39.8% and affected about 93.3 million of US adults in 2015~2016, it should be illegal for restaurants to serve such meals. As for saying you get the meal free of charge if you eat it in an hour, where is the morality of Big Texan? I see none. What if the restaurant said you get a bottle of bourbon free if you drink it all in an hour? Perhaps Big Texan pushes that offer too.

And the woman and Big Texan think the whole thing was, as the saying goes, ‘clever and grown up’. It was neither. I have a friend who is grossly obese, and refuses to cut down on what he eats and drinks. That is the the reality of pigging oneself.

  2. Chris – not my “math”. From Wikipedia: “The United States had the highest rate of obesity within the OECD grouping of large trading economies.[3] From 23% obesity in 1962, estimates have steadily increased. 2014 figures from the CDC found that more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults age 20 and older[4] and 17% of children and adolescents aged 2–19 years were obese.[5] A second study from the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC showed that 39.6% of US adults age 20 and older were obese as of 2015-2016 (37.9% for men and 41.1% for women).[6]”

I take it that the National Center for Health Statistics and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not publish lies.

  3. I bet you’re fun at parties. What should be illegal is for miserable people to try and make other people miserable as well. STFU and get a hobby.

  4. It is my “business” because my taxes are spent/wasted on people who totally unnecessarily fill hospital beds and use other National Health Service resources from being obese. As for whether I support Robert Francis O’Rourke, what is the connection between eating sensibly and him wanting to be the next president of the USA? Perhaps because O’Rourke decried weapons “designed to kill people on a battlefield” being available to the general public?

If a bar has a moral duty not to serve a drunk with more alcohol, then a restaurant has a similar moral duty to over-eaters. Just why did the management at Big Texan put a 72 oz steak on the menu in the first place?

  5. Of course she does not look obese – but in 20 years’ time? I doubt if she is a typical Big Texan customer. Am I jealous? Of what? Live and let live? Or let die – early?

  6. No we are not our brothers or sisters keepers. People who choose to eat in contests are their choices. Obesity is not the issue here, eating that much protein will not cause her to gain an inch.

Obesity usually begins with someone usually in their formative years ( some sort of trauma at least in their minds ) Obesity can be helped not cured. But that person has to WANT to help themselves. So, there’s your answer.

  7. “If a bar has a moral duty not to serve a drunk with more alcohol, then a restaurant has a similar moral duty to over-eaters.”

The difference is that a drunk driver could kill somebody else. I have never seen a news story where obesity was the cause of a car crash. Obesity only hurts those that are obese.

I bet that you’re one of those former fatties that’s out on his “moral” crusade to save us all from ourselves.

  8. Don’t worry. It’s not French fries (that does make you fat), but meat does not make people fat or put them at risk of disease, only carbohydrates. It won’t affect your taxes, at least this steak one. Maybe she’s into other food that is not healthy though.

  9. why prance about a simple photo and post? its not your body so why are you complaining about hers?
and your friend what business it is of yours to even post publicly about her? is it your body? your health?
then it should not be any of you business! Sit down look in the mirror thats all you should be worried about!

  10. Eric-it is your math. That is the price of the easiest access to calories of any society in the history of man coupled with the most sedentary lifestyle in the history of man. As opposed to starvation and famine mixed in with hunting and fishing.

  11. Grump grump, scold scold, frump frump. Take your dour attitude somewhere else. The woman is clearly not obese, and if an adult wants to engage in an eating challenge of their own free will for fun and a little attention, more power to them! Go sit in a puritanical pew somewhere and look down your nose at everyone else if you like, but you just sound nasty, sour, and silly lecturing people having fun and making this into something it isn’t.

  12. That woman is not grossly or even slightly obese in any way. Those that you pretend to be concerned for are likely guilty of that gluttony and most have done it by following the totally incorrect US dietary guidelines or the healthy diets that hit the magazines and papers on a weekly basis. Steak.is not the cause of obesity and is actually one of the healthier foods that you can eat.

  13. Don’t want a gun, don’t buy one. Don’t want an abortion, don’t have one. Don’t want a 72oz steak, don’t eat one. Isn’t Freedom Awesome!!!

  14. I have eat there many times when I was running west to Calif,, Tried the 72 oz steak meal a couple times,, did not even get half way,, The food there steaks included is very good and a nice atmosphere.
They have been doing this way before i became a trucker in the 70s, its nothing new and actually fun to try to do it,, Its called enjoying life.. so relax.. enjoy what time ya got here

  15. I should have been surprised by the strength and types of response (another one a day ago) to my thoughts about a woman gorging herself on not just one but two 72 ounce steaks in AN HOUR. And just for a “challenge”. Just what are the raw nerves I have touched? Every response has been negative.

These negative responses are of two types: it was none of my business; and the woman was obviously not obese, so why did I mention obesity and my obese friend.

If what Big Texan sells – 72 ounce steaks free of charge if eaten within an hour as some sort of adult thing to do – was in a vacuum, then it might be none of my business. But it is not. Someone described the USA as little more than a land of places to eat and shopping malls. Over the years that I have been reading (and commenting on) the items posted here, what has struck me is that a large proportion of the Route 66 businesses mentioned are places to eat; many offering supposedly special (almost unique) menus. Of course, the 1930s users of the road needed to eat, along with sleeping and refuelling and repairing their vehicles. But why today’s harping on about food? To someone who eats to live – rather than who lives to eat – the American emphasis on food makes me realise why so many Americans are the size they are. And that is from observations made over six decades. My quoting the official figure for obesity in the USA upset someone; other official figures put the country as Number Three in the whole world for fat people, at 180.62 pounds average weight. Canada, by comparison, is 153.81 pounds; and Mexico 152.17 pounds. “And while the USA makes up only five per cent of the world’s population, it accounts for almost a third of the world’s weight due to obesity”. The UK is No 10, at an average of 167.1 pounds.

One of the biggest complaints by those who go on about (human made) climate change is the carbon dioxide and methane emissions from farm livestock in general. The more meat people eat, the more animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry) will be born, raised and killed. So the amount of meat eaten is related to the human pollution of the atmosphere.

From the above, Big Texan’s 72 ounce steaks are my business.

As for my obese friend, because of his obesity (145 kilos = 320 pounds) he is unable to walk without a walking frame, is unable to wash himself, needs carers to wash him; he is unable to dress himself, and is dangerously unstable when on his feet. He has fallen over three times in the past week – once in hospital where a special airbed was needed to get him off the floor and upright; and twice at his home. On the second occasion, the emergency call service has my phone number, and I was rung to go to his house. It needed a neighbour and me to get him back on his feet. He has been in hospital because of his falls, all related to his overweight, which he refuses to reduce. On the third occasion I was again rung by the emergency call service; the 75 year old neighbour who had helped before was out, so the ambulance service was called. Four paramedics spent over two hours with him, giving him oxygen, getting him back on his feet; taking them away from attending to real emergencies. Apart from his professional carers, I am his only visitor on a regular basis; otherwise he would be entirely on his own. He has no other friends, and he is a constant drain on the National Health Service solely from his over eating and the medical conditions arising directly from it.

So I do feel I am in a position to talk about over eating, and its effects on those who do it and on others involved in their daily lives.

I only hope this woman who is called a “professional eater” does not finish up like my friend.

By the way, I am not a “puritan”, I am a non-theist. And the USA would not be the place it is today without the Puritans that settled in New England and Massachusetts. Looking at Donald Trump, I don’t think he is one (115 kg = 253 lbs; body mass indicator of 33.4 – over 30 is classed as obese). Not surprisingly, “He has appeared in TV adverts for Burger King and Pizza Hut.”

  16. She is not Obese. Eating that much that rapidly is apparently something she does often, so it doesn’t seem to have done anything at all to her body. She did not drink an entire bottle of whisky. And, thank God, you are not in charge of what the rest of us can and cannot do. Tend to your own knitting.

  17. Protein. I agree that obesity is an epidemic in the US, but this is not the cause. The problem is foods with a lot of sugar and GMOs.

  18. The previous post on this topic was in Nov 2019. What has made Ariella (real full name is what?) comment now? He or she says, “I agree that obesity is an epidemic in the US, but this is not the cause”. Obesity is a problem in most countries with a “western” diet, and that includes all the Americas, Australasia, most of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Its main causes are an almost lack of need for physical labour in most jobs, people refusing to walk even short distances, the ready availability of cooked food from takeaways, etc, the soft drink industry pushing their products ad nauseam, hours of food programes on TV, and a lack of general self-discipline.

Jake Whistler said, “so it doesn’t seem to have done anything at all to her body”. He cannot see inside her body, nor inside her mind.

I have previously posted “My quoting the official figure for obesity in the USA upset someone; other official figures put the country as Number Three in the whole world for fat people, at 180.62 pounds average weight. Canada, by comparison, is 153.81 pounds; and Mexico 152.17 pounds. “And while the USA makes up only five per cent of the world’s population, it accounts for almost a third of the world’s weight due to obesity”. The UK is No 10, at an average of 167.1 pounds.”

My grossly obese friend who in 2019 weighed 145 kilos = 320 pounds, died in February 2020 weighing 171 kilos = 378 pounds. And he did not die because he had Covid 19.

There is nothing clever or adult in a restaurant offering 72 lb steaks in the first place, nor in the woman gorging herself on one at any time, let alone two in an hour.

I’d say she was mentally abnormal.

Anyone wanting to look at a typical Usan (American) for obesity and exccess weight needs look no further than Donald Trump, or many of the police officers who feature in mobile phone stills and videos.

  19. Why do you have to be so mean and negative? Evidently, from the picture, the young lady is fully aware of what she’s doing. Try being a little more positive or not post anything at all.
