Fourth new or restored neon sign lighted via Route 66 grant in Tulsa

A fourth neon sign that’s new or restored along Route 66 in Tulsa came to life last week, this time at U.S. Studio 66.

U.S. Studio 66 is at 5202 E. 11th St. (aka Route 66), just west of the historic Desert Hills Motel.

Other signs that are new or have been restored are Billy Ray’s Catfish & BBQ and Tally’s Good Food Cafe that won grants through the city’s Route 66 neon sign program.

Other Route 66 sign grants that have been approved are Cities Service Station, Flo’s Burger Diner and Renaissance Brewing Co.

And Mary Beth Babcock at Buck Atoms Cosmic Curios on Route 66 is fundraising for her proposed neon sign.

Also on the neon-sign application list are Bobby O’s Slices & Pies and Interparts of Tulsa, both on the city’s 11th Street.

The city also is planning a neon-sign park on the south side of the historic 11th Street Bridge. It will consist of re-created of long-lost signs from defunct businesses.

Plus preservationists are working to add downtown to the Route 66 overlay area so more sign projects become eligible.
