Castaneda Hotel wins state preservation award

The Castaneda Hotel of Las Vegas, New Mexico, recently won a 2022 CPRC Heritage Preservation Award for architectural heritage from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Commission.

The state historic preservation office posted this on social media about the award:

Affeldt and Mion also own the historic Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas, New Mexico, and La Posada hotel along Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona.

Affeldt and his Las Vegas properties have been in the news lately because they’ve been hosting and feeding firefighters and other first responders from all over the nation who are battling a humongous wildfire in northern New Mexico that briefly threatened the city.

Las Vegas, New Mexico, sits a few miles from the Santa Fe Loop alignment of Route 66 but has become a common side trip for travelers.

However, it’s not advisable to visit the city for now because wildfires have made it a volatile situation in the area.
